Demo report from

Bradbourne Carriage Riding Club

Sunday 6th July 2025:

Bradbourne CDC were delighted to host a demonstration of long reining by Berith Eriksson at the club in Sevenoaks .  More than 30 members and non-members attended.  Berith demonstrated the techniques for ‘riding from the ground’ with a long reining novice pony (Cabby owned by Annie Akers) and then with the much more experienced and well trained Prophet owned by Celia Tester

Both animals performed really well in her capable hands and she demonstrated the start of the process through to the more intricate and demanding exercises used to help with flexibility and impulsion.  Based on the first three Scales of Training – rhythm, suppleness and contact, Berith showed the progress which can be made when long reining is carried out with skill and patience.  Excellent explanations of the equipment used, safety and do and don’ts inspired us all to try!

Bradbourne Carriage Driving Club is grateful to British Carriagedriving for the support of a BC training grant to enable us to host this event, to the Centre for the use of the arena and  to those members of the Committee who helped with the organisation.

What is long reining?

Long reining is a versatile and valuable training technique for horses of all levels, from novice to advanced.

It extends beyond basic groundwork, allowing the handler to communicate with the horse at a greater distance, mimicking the feeling of riding without the rider's weight. This method is excellent for introducing young horses to the concept of contact, lateral movements, and engagement.

Skilled long reining can also enhance the performance of established riding/driving horses, improving their suppleness, engagement and overall athletic ability through targeted exercises and nuanced communication.
